Start-Up FAQ.

Starting May 1 (weather dependent)

You do not need to be home for your start-up appointment, but your water does need to be turned on. Click ‘how to prepare for King’s arrival’ for more information >>

  • If no one is going to be home for the appointment please complete the following PRIOR to our arrival:

    • Close the inside drain (if applicable)

    • Turn the inside WATER valve for the sprinkler system to ON. You will hear water fill the pipes. The sound of running water should stop within 60-seconds.

IMPORTANT: If the sound of running water does not stop, TURN YOUR WATER OFF. Kings is not responsible for any damage that may occur before our arrival. Give us a call at 403-250-2685 and we can assist you.

    • Turn your controller to the RUN or ON position.

    • On the day of your appointment, kindly leave your pets inside and your gates unlocked.

  • At the of booking, you can approve up to $100 in additional labour and parts. This should cover any minor repairs and you will be invoiced following the appointment. If parts are used, a minimum charge of $15 will be applied.

If major repairs are needed, the technician will report all of the details to the office who will reach out with an estimate.

If you decline the preapproval, the technician will start your system but not perform any repairs. Our office will send you details outlining what was found and you can book a service appointment.

  • We start booking in May because freezing temperatures are less likely (which can damage your system if it is on) and it gets everything running before growing season.

  • When you book a startup, the irrigation technician will:

    • Turn the exterior water on for a visual inspection of the system

    • Adjust the nozzles for maximum coverage and efficiency

    • Check the valves to ensure they are working

    • Program and test exterior controllers (including rain sensor)

    • Identify any damaged or broken components

    If accessible, the technician will:

    • Check the inside main line

    • Check the water meter

    • Program and test interior controllers (including rain sensor)

Winterization FAQ.

September 15 - October 30 (weather dependent)

You do not need to be home for your winterization appointment, but your water does need to be turned off. Click ‘how do I prepare for King’s arrival’ for more information >>

Please complete PRIOR to your winterization appointment

  • Ple

Complete PRIOR to 7 AM on the day of your appointment.

    • Leave your GATES UNLOCKED and dogs inside.

    • Turn OFF the inside WATER valve to the sprinkler system.

    • Open the inside and outside drain valve(s) (if applicable) and allow the mainline to drain completely into a bucket or into the floor drain in your basement. Close the inside drain, after mainline has completely drained and prior to your winterization appointment.

    • Please flag and locate ALL of your valve boxes (these are usually green in colour and contain numerous valves in each box in the yard). Do not open the valves boxes; if it is cold this can cause the valves to freeze. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but sometimes we forget where the valve boxes are located and they can be extremely difficult to find if they are buried under snow, rocks, mulch or leaves.

    • Please open any additional hose bibs that are a part of the sprinkler system.

  • To keep our costs low and to winterize the maximum number of customers, we do not perform repairs during winterization appointments. The technicians will take notes of any repairs needed to add to your file for the spring. As your system will be off for the winter, most damage is not urgent and can be completed in the spring.

  • We typically offer appointments from September 15 through October 15 but will continue to winterize until the ground freezes. Ideally, you want to winterize before temperatures drop to freezing.

In Alberta, we can have a mild fall and late winter, but it can be unpredictable, so we still recommend winterizing as early as possible.

  • Yes, we recommend winterizing as any water left in your system may freeze during Alberta’s winter months and will likely cause damage.

  • You do not need to be home for a winterization appointment.

    The technician will:

    • Hook a high-end compressor to the outside manifold via the plumbing, valve box or in rare cases, a sprinkler head

    • Valves are opened and closed manually to ensure all zones are blown out

    • Large heads will be flushed manually as the compressor is running

    • Ensure system is closed up for the winter

  • Prepaying for your winterization either online through our website, or over the phone, will be at a discounted rate. Appointments invoiced after they occur are $20 more.

Rates are determined by location, number of zones and date (see the ‘Book Services Online’ button above, find your postal code in the winterization options and follow the steps to see the rates for your area).

Please note: Cancellations of prepaid appointments must be acknowledged by staff and are subject to a $10 cancellation fee. Appointments cancelled less than 2 business days prior are non-refundable.

Backflow Device FAQ.

Also known as Cross Connection Control Device

A backflow prevention device is a cross connection device that ensures no water from the outside (ie your irrigation system) can come back into the house and bring harmful contaminants into the house system.

  • <- Click ‘Book Online’, click any of the backflow test options to see a picture of what a ‘double check valve’ looks like. You do not need a test if you have a ‘dual check valve’. If you are unsure or have any questions, please feel free to contact us before booking.

  • Yes, you do need to have a backflow device. They have been required for many years, and as of 2013 a testable model is also required.

  • Yes, Kings has certified technicians that can test backflow devices. We can install them to proper specs and have them inspected by the City of Calgary or your jurisdiction.

  • This is dependent on the location of your mechanical room and the time required to get the supply line outside but the average cost is $700-$950. Kings can provide a free estimate and is able to install and submit any paperwork to the City of Calgary or the appropriate district for your location.

Landscape Lighting FAQ.

Landscape lighting helps to elevate the beauty and work you’ve put into your yard and lets you continue to enjoy it at night.

Lighting can also be used for safety and security. Strategically placed lights help highlight paths, steps and let you and your guests navigate your property safely.

  • Low voltage lighting (12‐volt) is safer than 120‐volt systems because the low level of energy eliminates the possibility of electrocution from accidentally cutting the wire. LED Landscape Lighting is also more energy efficient than Halogen, providing more light per watt of power and as an added BONUS the bulbs last years longer!

LED Lawn/Landscape Lighting, provides a brighter, longer lasting, more professional look, especially when installed and placed correctly. Here at Kings Irrigation, we have years of experience in creating the perfect solution for you. Get in touch today for a

  • At King’s we want to provide our customers with landscape lighting that work all year round. A solar lighting system only works well if it receives the amount of sunlight recommended by the manufacturer to fully charge the batteries. Less than optimal battery charging shortens the battery life and the batteries in most solar light systems are irreplaceable.

Although you may pay less for your lights upfront the amount you will spend replacing them year after year can really add up. In the City of Calgary you will find that during the late fall and into spring most solar lights only work for a few hours due to the lack of sunlight received. This means your house is lacking the security of a well‐lit yard.
